New England typically keeps the identities of the tryout players at mini-camps a secret, but one has become known -- and apparently did a good job impressing the Patriots' coaching staff.

Confirming previous reports, the team has signed receiver Buddy Farnham, the Ivy League player of the year at Brown last fall. Farnham finished his Bears career with 229 receptions (sixth in Ivy history) and 2,895 receiving yards; his 636 punt return yards are a school record.

An Andover, Mass. native, Farnham was slated to go to Tampa Bay for a tryout but a last-minute call from the Pats compelled him to stay closer to home. Listed at 6-feet, 200 pounds, officials at Brown consider Farnham to be a throwback-type player, one who came to the facility every day and just did his job.

Sounds like Bill Belichick's type of guy.
