This was part of our Patriots' notebook in Sunday's paper, but we neglected to post it here.

At any rate, UMass-Lowell will have some heavy hitters at its commencement ceremony this Saturday morning: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Pats owner Robert Kraft.

Kraft will introduce his friend Goodell, who will address the school's graduates and also accept a posthumous Doctorate of Humane Letters degree for his father, the late U.S. Senator Charles Goodell.

(If you need proof of how far back their relationship goes, this picture is from a 1995 press conference at the State House, when the pair asked the state for some funds for the franchise.)

Kraft played a major role in Roger Goodell's selection as the man to succeed Paul Tagliabue as NFL commissioner in 2006.

A liberal Republican from New York, Charles Goodell was a Representative from the state who was appointed to the Senate after the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in 1968.
