Our own Mark Shanahan and Meredith Goldstein had the news a couple weeks back that Bill Belichick will be riding in this weekend's Best Buddies Challenge, which is the signature charity event of his quarterback Tom Brady.

So yesterday, Belichick released a statement about his participation in the race (a first-time thing for him), saying ... "I am looking forward to taking part in this weekend's Best Buddies Challenge. Best Buddies has made such a great impact on the lives of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities and I am excited to experience firsthand the camaraderie, competition and spirit of everyone involved."

I'm told Belichick is opting for the 50-mile ride, which starts in Plymouth. Riders have a choice between 100 (from the JFK Library), 50 and 20 miles, so the Patriots coach has got to feel pretty good about his ability to hop on a bike and make it to the Cape.

And as for the flag football game tomorrow at Harvard, I know one more Patriot has committed to play in that -- NT Vince Wilfork. That means, outside of Brady, the New England will be represented by Dan Koppen, Steve Neal, Tully Banta-Cain, Pierre Woods and Wilfork, which could make for some interesting "receivers" in the touch competition.

Wes Welker will be in attendance too. But I'm guessing the guy in the picture above -- No matter how good Welker looked on Wednesday -- won't be clearing him to play in this one.
