The Patriots plan to be among the teams attending BYU tailback Harvey Unga's July 8 workout in Provo, Utah, according to a league source, in advance of the July 15 supplemental draft. Unga's audience in Provo is expected to include scouts from more than three-quarters of the league's 32 teams.
Don't overreact too much here -- New England's plan may well just be to cover its bases on the kid. Or maybe they have genuine interest.
The 6-foot, 237-pound jackhammer rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons with the Cougars. He voluntarily withdrew from BYU in April over an honor code violation. It should be said that, despite all that, he's considered to be of very high character.
If you take a player in the supplemental draft, you give up the corresponding pick in the next year's college draft. So if you got Unga with, say, your fifth-round pick, you give up your 5 in 2011.
One notable supplemental draft bargain in recent years was Jared Gaither, who went to Baltimore in the fifth round of the 2007 proceedings. He's been the Ravens' starting left tackle the last two years.
