It's not too often that we get to see an active player make picks on who he thinks will finish where in the NFL standings. So it's worth standing up and taking notice when one of those guys is willing to stick his neck out and do it.

In a remarkably thoughtful fill-in appearance writing Monday Morning Quarterback at SI.com, Texans OT Eric Winston picks the Patriots and Dolphins to make it out of the East and into the playoffs. Remember, Winston saw New England in Week 17 -- a 34-27 come-from-behind Houston win and the Texans' most recent game -- so the Patriots are still fairly fresh in his mind. Here's his take on the Patriots ...

I think the AFC East is the hardest division to predict in the whole league. There will be a really good team that doesn't make the playoffs out of this division. The Pats know how to win those AFC East games and Wes Welker looks like he will be ready. Hard to bet against them.
Check out the rest of Winston's effort stepping into the big shoes of Peter King too. It's a good one. Pretty cool to get insight from a player with well-developed feelings on overtime, roster limits and rookie wages, among other things.
