New England has placed WR Wes Welker, LB Shawn Crable and rookie DL Kade Weston on the active/physically unable to perform list, a league source confirms.

Under league rules, players can be taken off the list at any time; however, once training camp starts, players cannot be placed on the list.

That Welker is here is not a great surprise. Though there had been recent reports indicating that the All-Pro, who underwent surgery to repair his torn left ACL in early February, would be ready to participate in training camp from Day One, the team's medical staff may not yet be ready to give him the green light and are taking this move as a precaution. Also, if Welker will be on the list for a longer period of time -- say over a week -- this allows the Patriots some roster flexibility, as Welker (and Crable and Weston) will not count against the 80-man training camp roster limit.

For fans and observers anxious to see what Crable has to offer after spending his first two seasons on injured reserve, this could be a bad sign, or it could be as simple as his failing the team's conditioning test (which, if he failed that, isn't great for someone who has spent months getting ready to get back on the field).
