Patriots veteran defensive end Ty Warren has been placed on injured reserve with a hip injury and will be out the rest of the season.

Warren, who is in his eighth season, is scheduled to have surgery with hip specialist Dr. Mark Philippon in Vail, Colo. on Monday.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said the situation is a "tough break" for Warren, but the team has to move on.

"He's missed quite a bit of time the last couple of years, so we've had to deal with that anyway," Belichick said. "Unfortunately, that's part of the game."

The Globe's Shalise Manza Young reported that Warren suffered the injury in the third practice of training camp. He has not been on the field since.

"... It's more a question of doing what's best giving all the circumstances of the situation," Belichick said. "We knew a little while ago there was a possibility it might be a longer period of time. There was also the possibility it might be for a shorter period of time. As more information was gathered from various sources and a combination of all that coming together and the player, medical people and so forth, this was the decision that was made."
