Yesterday, there seemed to be at least an outside chance that the Patriots' haul of 2009 and '10 draft picks would slip from 24 to 23.

Then, Kade Weston cleared waivers. Weston was injured against the Falcons, and to save his roster spot before putting him on injured reserve, they had to expose him to waivers. They could have had held his roster spot and put him on IR at the final cutdown, but chose to save the roster spot instead.

Weston was the 11th of 12 Patriot draft picks last April, and was the third of the team's four seventh-round picks.

So in a way ... by getting waived, Weston is the first of the Patriot rookies to make the team. Congrats, Kade.

During training camp, Weston was clearly behind fellow seventh-round defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick. That makes sense, of course, because Deaderick played the 5-technique end in a Patriot-like 3-4 front at Alabama.
