FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The Patriots bolstered their backfield today with the signing of RB Thomas Clayton to the 53-man roster from Cleveland's practice squad. To make room for Clayton, the Patriots released OL Quinn Ojinnaka.
Clayton, a 5-foot-11-inch, 222-pounder, returns to New England after participating in the Patriots' training camp. After he was waived Sept. 4, the Browns signed Clayton, a Kansas State product who was originally drafted by the 49ers in the sixth round of the 2007 draft. He played sparingly over the next two seasons, spending the entire 2007 season on the 49ers practice squad. He remained there through the first 14 weeks of the 2008 season before being signed to the active roster for the final two games. He spent all of last season on injured reserve after getting hurt during the preseason.
The 6-5, 295-pound Ojinnaka, a veteran of four NFL seasons after he was drafted out of Syracuse by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth-round of the 2006 draft, was released after the Patriots acquired him Aug. 23 for undisclosed draft considerations.
