NFL vice president Ray Anderson appeared on ESPN's Mike and Mike show this morning, and called the hit Sunday by Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather on Ravens tight end Todd Heap 'egregious' and 'flagrant.'

Anderson was discussing the NFL's plan to closely scrutinize hits to the head and neck areas and increase disciplinary measures. He was asked specifically about certain plays on Sunday, including Meriweather's helmet-to-helmet hit and the Falcons' Dunta Robinson's shot on Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson.

Anderson also said the league was not implementing a new rule, but instead taking a more stringent approach to enforcing existing rules to protect defenseless players.
