Jets have definite interest in Moss

In the Sunday notes, I wrote a passage about the possibility of Randy Moss landing with the New York Jets for a few different reasons. Part of it was because of the way Rex Ryan talked about Moss, but also there had been quiet rumblings this was a possibility among league sources.

Randy Moss in a Jets uniform? It could happen. Among several free agents, the Jets have receivers Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards. They have said re-signing Holmes is a priority. Edwards would likely have to agree to a contract with the Jets that might be less than market value. And he might very well balk at that and cash in elsewhere. Enter Moss, another big target. Only one team, the Titans, put in a claim for him when he was released by the Vikings. And considering his performance in Tennessee, most teams aren’t going to waste their time with a 34-year-old receiver with diminishing skills, let alone one who’s known as a problem child. But coach Rex Ryan could be interested. Ryan has enough cachet where he could keep Moss in line, and the Jets would probably enjoy tweaking the Patriots. Ryan spoke highly of Moss last month. “Randy Moss, I’ve said all along, is a great vertical receiver,’’ Ryan said at the owners’ meetings. “And you have to roll coverage. Most teams would have to roll coverage to him. We never did, but we got burned for a touchdown. But he was a weapon. A vertical weapon down the field.’’ Curiously, when Ryan began to speak about Moss, he checked first with team spokesman Bruce Speight to see if it would be tampering.

Guess I should have written it a little stronger.

In the past day, two well-respected NFL writers, Mike Freeman of cbssports.com and Vic Carrucci of nfl.com, wrote the Jets have definite interest in Moss.

Freeman:

Ryan recently raved about Moss, and despite what the Jets may say publicly, several league sources told CBSSports.com the team is seriously intrigued by Moss. That doesn't mean they'll sign him, but it's a possibility.

Carrucci:

According to multiple league insiders, the interest the Jets have in Moss is twofold. One, it could help them weather the very real possibility of losing at least one of their three free-agent receivers: Holmes, Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith. Two, it would keep Moss from returning to the Patriots, whom he is known to want to re-join.

Should make things interesting post lockout.

Should the Patriots even care -- do they care -- if Moss lands with the Jets?

They'd probably be secretly wishing for Moss to get thrown into Mark Sanchez's head. He's already a little iffy. Add in the need for Moss to get fed early in games and how you have to keep him interested, all that extra mental effort could actually hurt Sanchez more than having Moss (the good one) as a target.

Would Patriots fans care if Moss went to the Jets? Would you like to see him back here?
