As of Monday, the Patriots were $9.2 million under the salary cap, a league source confirmed.

ProFootballTalk.com first reported the numbers on a league-wide scale. The Patriots rank 16th in most available cap space.

The Patriots' cap number does not include the up to $3 million veteran exception, the source said. They have not informed the league they want it. It's a club option to take it. It's not automatic. But, you would think the Patriots would use it at some point.

Teams must spend at least 89 percent of the $120.375 million cap this year. League-wide, teams must spend an average of 99 percent of the cap this year. Whatever difference there is, the NFL must cut the NFLPA a check for it.
