The Patriots today placed long-time left tackle Matt Light on the reserve/retired list today, according to a league source.

That means the Patriots have reason to believe that Light, 33, has retired. To unretire, Light only needs to declare his intention to resume playing again.

The move will save the Patriots at least $5 million against the cap this season.

Light was a second-round pick by the Patriots in the 2001 draft out of Purdue. He started 12 games as a rookie, including first of three Super Bowl titles. Light also started Super Bowls after the 2007 and 2011 seasons.

Light was voted to four Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro in 2007. He started 153 games in his career.

Light played some of his best football the second half of last season, but he's always had other interests than football. Matt and his wife, Susie, have three children: Collin, William and Gracie. The Matt Light Foundation awards scholarships in his hometown of Greenville, Ohio, West Lafayette, Ind. and New England.
