FOXBOROUGH - When he became a free agent, guard/tackle Robert Gallery was looking for a situation that would put him in a position to finally enjoy some team success.

Obviously, in signing a one-year deal with the Patriots, Gallery chose wisely.

Gallery, the second overall pick in the 2004 draft, has been part of teams that have gone a combined 45-88 in his previous eight season, including the first seven with the Raiders.

The closest Gallery, 31, has been to a winning record was the 8-8 mark Oakland posted in 2010.

"That's one of the big reasons why we came here, because we've never had a winning season in my eight years and obviously that's why you play the game," Galllery said. "It's a very big part of why I decided to come here.

"You're put into a situation and we all know that winning and being part of a winning team gets you a lot of those things. Obviously it hasn't been ideal, but you play with the cards you're dealt. I'm just glad for the opportunity to come to a place like this and I still know I have a lot left in me."

Where the 6-foot-7, 325-pound Gallery fits in with the Patriots remains to be seen. He was likely signed for insurance in case Logan Mankins (ACL surgery) needs additional time to get back in the lineup at left guard. Gallery could fill at tackle in a pinch if need me.

But Gallery said he's coming with the mentality to win a starting job.

"That's up for the coaches to decide," he said. "I've been told they're going to put the best five guys on the field. I'm going to be one of the best five guys. That's my goal and they're going to put guys where they see fit.

"I'm coming in to earn a starting spot and there are a lot of things that go into that: staying healthy and performing well. But that's why I'm here. Everyone has their goals and I came here to be a starter and contribute."
