FOXBOROUGH -- After being regulated to watching the last four practices and more or less bandying about during team drills, Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes got his first taste of action today.

The now three-year pro took part in all of the linebacker drills and was active in the Patriots' 11-on-11s, marking the first time he had been in live action since the Super Bowl in February.

Spikes had his knee scoped in the offseason after suffering an injury last year. He missed eight games last season. But today, in the Patriots' fifth practice of training camp and third in pads, he was inserted right into the first-team lineup.

"You know it's kind of frustrating just watching from the sideline," Spikes told reporters afterward. "Just to get out, run around, and get a little contact, it feels good."

He wouldn't say where he was in rehabilitation.

"I'm just working to try to get out there full time," Spikes said. "So, whatever they ask me to do I try and do it, 100 percent."
