TO RECAP
The Patriots had their first preseason game on Thursday night, and came out on top of a 7-6 nail-biter. Even though two of the NFL's elite quarterbacks, Drew Brees and Tom Brady, were on the field, it wasn't exactly an offensive explosion.

One of the bright spots for the Patriots was the play of rookie Chandler Jones, who did well for himself against Saints left tackle Jermon Bushrod, a 2011 Pro Bowler. Greg Bedard had Jones pressuring the quarterback five times in 14 dropbacks.

Chris Gasper writes that even ugly exhibition football is better than watching the woeful Red Sox.

There was one significant injury for the Pats last night: LB Dane Fletcher suffered what is believed to be a torn ACL. Fletcher was the top backup to Brandon Spikes at middle linebacker, and with Spikes still on the sidelines and Fletcher now out, rookie Dont'a Hightower will probably slide into the MLB spot, with Bobby Carpenter getting more chances at strongside, where Hightower has seen most of his snaps in camp.

QUOTE/TWEET OF THE DAY
"It’s kind of a like a relationship. Relationships can only get stronger so we’re going to see how that goes."
-- Patrick Chung, talking about his new teammate at safety, Steve Gregory. Chung is a newlywed, so he must still have his rose-colored glasses on when it comes to relationships. We kid, we kid.

AROUND THE DIVISION
The Bills also had their preseason opener Thursday night, welcoming Robert Griffin III and the Redskins to Ralph Wilson Stadium. That game was about as thrilling as the Pats-Saints, and ended with the same 7-6 score.

The Dolphins have their preseason opener against the Bucs tonight, which means rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill steps into the spotlight.

In the Land of Tebow, Tim and the Jets are in Cincinnati for tonight's exhibition opener. Tebow's first-ever NFL game was also against the Bengals; this time he goes in not only as a quarterback but also a special-teamer.
