The Patriots will host veteran receiver Plaxico Burress for a workout, a league source confirmed.

Burress, who spent last year with the Jets after a two-season hiatus because of his legal troubles (he shot himself in the leg in a nightclub in November 2008 and spent 22 months in prison on weapons charges stemming from the incident), celebrates his 35th birthday today.

He has also played for the Steelers and Giants, where he is remembered not-so-fondly by New England fans as the player who caught the game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl XLII.

It is likely that the Patriots are simply doing their due diligence by working out Burress, and/or doing a favor for his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, in an effort to drum up interest in the receiver.

The Patriots will also bring in former Packers tackle Chad Clifton for a visit.
