FOXBOROUGH - The Patriots have waived linebacker Dane Fletcher and receiver Britt Davis.

Both have the injury designation, so they could be put on injured reserve if they go unclaimed.

The Patriots have already reached an injury settlement with Davis, a league source said. So he won't be returning after hurting his left shoulder against the Saints.

Fletcher, who suffered a torn left ACL against the Saints, has been a contributor on special teams and as a backup linebacker. He is due to become an RFA after this season.

It's similar to the Giants/Jake Ballard situation. The Giants wanted to save a roster spot and hoped to sneak him through waivers. But the Patriots jumped in.

Will someone jump in on Fletcher? They would have to be willing to sacrifice a roster position until at least the 75-man cutdown to do that.

The Patriots could have just put Fletcher on IR outright. Not sure why they didn't do that. Perhaps it's to save a roster spot. Players sent straight to injured reserve likely count toward the roster limit until the cutdown to 75.
