A day after Brandon Bolden was suspended by the NFL for violating the league's performance enhancing substances policy, the Patriots filled his roster vacancy by activating tight end Visanthe Shiancoe from the injured reserve list.

Shiancoe, who was rehabbing from a shoulder injury, missed the first nine weeks of the season but was able to return after being placed on the NFL's new injured reserve with a designation to return list. He signed with the Patriots July 25 as a free agent.

With Shiancoe on the roster, the Patriots now have five active tight ends, including Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Daniel Fells, and Michael Hoomanawanui. Hoomanawanui has also played some fullback for the Patriots.
