EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Running back Shane Vereen did his part to make up for the absence of Rob Gronkowski in the Patriots passing game.

Vereen caught a swing pass from Tom Brady near the left sideline, then sprinted 75 yards to the end zone. It was an 83-yard play that put the Patriots up 14-0 in the second quarter. Vereen was wide open when he caught the pass from Brady after another Jets defensive miscue.

"I was a little surprised," Vereen said after the game. "I thought the cornerback was on me, but the receivers ran (the coverage) off and I was able to finish the play. As soon as I turned, the ball was on me.

"I think it was a great play call. It was a swing pass and I caught the ball and I finished it off for the team... Tom [Brady] just does a great job going through his reads and he just found me

On the Patriots scoring three touchdowns in 52 seconds: "I've never seen it personally," Vereen said. "But, that's what happens when you play hard.

"Starting fast was huge for us and we were able to come out and put some drives together and the defense did a great job at turning the ball over and giving us more opportunities."

Vereen finished with 10 carries for 42 yards and had another 91 yards receiving via two receptions.
