FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots announced they have released linebacker A.J. Edds, offensive lineman R.J. Mattes, and defensive lineman Scott Vallone.

Vallone was an undrafted rookie out of Rutgers who played all four years at defensive tackle. He had a hard time breaking into a group of tackles that featured more and more of the team's athletic defensive ends inside.

Mattes, another undrafted rookie, was released for the second time.

Edds first came into the Patriots fold after being claimed off waivers Sept. 7, 2011. He played in two games before being released and then signed to the practice squad. The Indianapolis Colts signed Edds off the team's practice squad, allowing him to play nine games. But he spent all of 2012 on injured reserve.
