Good morning.

Since the Patriots will practice Monday and then travel to Philadelphia for the rest of the week for joint practices with the Eagles and then their first preseason game Friday night, today is a day off for players.

On Saturday, Bill Belichick split the team into Blue and White groups for a shells-and-shorts scrimmage which essentially pitted most of the top offensive players (white team) against the top defensive players (blue team); the white team also had reserve defensive players and the blue team had backup offensive players.

Tom Brady had a light day of work with the white team, leaving Ryan Mallett to quarterback the group for much of the practice; Tim Tebow was quarterback of the blue team. The two sides were competitive, even doing their dynamic and static stretching on different fields and celebrating big plays from their teammates.

After wrapping up the day with his players, Belichick flew to Canton, Ohio for the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony where his former boss, Bill Parcells, was among those honored.

AROUND THE NFL

The Jets held their Green and White scrimmage on Saturday night, and rookie Geno Smith got more snaps with the first-team offense than Mark Sanchez. Sanchez was also booed after throwing an interception.

Just a little bit embarrassing: Kevin Kolb, in competition with rookie E.J. Manuel for the Bills’ starting quarterback job, slipped on a rubber mat walking out to practice and suffered a knee injury.

Neither the Dolphins nor Cowboys are expected to play their marquee players on Sunday night in the Hall of Fame game, meaning Miami’s rookies will be in the spotlight.

The Broncos also held a scrimmage on Saturday – or tried. Heavy rains cut the practice short and led to Peyton Manning and teammates slip-sliding through the mud.
