FOXBOROUGH - Veterans Marquice Cole and Leon Washington were released by the Patriots on Sunday, explaining why neither was spotted during practice earlier in the day.

They were released because New England needed the roster space: though it went into the day with two open spots on the 53-man roster, the team was awarded four players on waivers.

The Patriots received third-year linebacker Chris White off waivers from the Lions, rookies A.J. Francis, a defensive tackle, and Chris Barker, an interior offensive lineman, from the Dolphins, and another rookie O-lineman, Braxston Cave, off waivers from Cleveland.

The team also announced the signing of five players to the practice squad, all of whom were cut by the Patriots a day before: LB Jeff Tarpinian, S Kanorris Davis, LB Ja'Gared Davis, DB Justin Green and DL Marcus Forston.

The Patriots have three open practice squad spots.
