Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers says the $14K Wes Welker bet error was a track mistake & $ doesn’t need to be returned— darren rovell (@darrenrovell) May 16, 2014
Not all of the money Denver Broncos receiver Wes Welker was handing out at the Kentucky Derby was rightfully his, a spokesman for Churchill Downs said Friday.
"An individual believed to be a member of Wes Welker's group on Kentucky Derby day was the beneficiary of an overpayment north of $14,000 on a wager due to a tote malfunction," Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers said in a statement. "In turn, a letter has been sent to that individual in an attempt to resolve the error."
Several race attendees reported seeing Welker hand out $100 bills after the race, with one fan telling USA Today that Welker was shouting that he had "just won the Kentucky Derby." Welker did not reveal what bet he made and how much money he won.
