The Patriots signed defensive end Will Smith to the veteran minimum, according to multiple reports.
Smith inked a one-year deal with the Patriots for $920,000, including an $855,000 base salary (the minimum for nine accrued NFL seasons), a $15,000 workout bonus, and a $50,000 53-man roster bonus for the first game. He has no guaranteed money.
For Smith, this deal represents what is likely better interpreted as a tryout for the Patriots. The veteran will still have to compete for his job in training camp. But more than that, it appears this contract will not deter the Patriots from addressing the defensive line again in the draft.
