FOXBOROUGH — After a slow start doomed the Patriots in the team's preseason opener against Washington last week — and subsequently opened backup quarterback Ryan Mallett to criticism — New England will trot out its starters Friday evening in the team's first home preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Patriots starters, including quarterback Tom Brady, are expected to take the field in their first live action after sitting against Washington. The Patriots have had three joint practices with the Eagles and are still in the midst of smoothing out the team's roster. However it is undetermined how much Brady and the rest of the starters will actually play.

Mallett, who finished 5 of 12 passing for 55 yards in last week's 23-6 loss to Washington, will certainly get an opportunity to improve his standing and reputation. As will rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who surprised observers with a strong showing in Washington with 157 passing yards and a touchdown.

Outside of the New York Giants, the Eagles (along with Washington) are the Patriots' most frequented preseason competitor. The Patriots hold an 11-10 record against Philadelphia and took last season's exhibition game at Lincoln Financial Field, 31-22.

Here are the details for Friday's game:
