Welch was one of the lone bright spots for an otherwise weak offense at Vanderbilt. He entered college as a tight end, then switched to offensive tackle before his sophomore year. He suffered an ankle sprain, which hampered him during the final six games of the season and caused him to miss games against Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky. He is known for his toughness and physical play, but he is considered undersized. In high school, he also played defensive end and quarterback.
