The Red Sox were ravaged with injuries to Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Josh Beckett last season but none was more critical than losing first baseman Kevin Youkilis for the final two months of the 2010 season to a thumb injury. This blow ultimately proved fatal to the Sox postseason chances. After sustaining a tear in an adductor muscle, the first baseman required surgery. Youkilis had been one of the Sox best hitters all season, with a .307 average, 19 home runs, 77 runs, and 62 RBIs in 102 games.
