Laurence MaroneyA day after trading the former first-round draft pick to the Broncos, where he was reunited with former New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Patriots coach Bill Belichick explained the move by saying it was good timing. "I just felt like it was the right time for us to move on," he said. "I have a lot of respect for Laurence. He came in, been here for four years, worked hard. "I think he's improved a lot and has helped us a lot as a player. I think he would have helped us this year, but we just felt like it was time to move on."
Maroney, a running back, found himself in the doghouse at the end of the 2009 season, when he was benched after a bout of fumble-itis, and did not play much in the preseason or first regular season game. He was traded two days after the 2010 season opener.
