1978: Tragedy and some triumph
Before the regular season even started, the Patriots suffered a devastating loss when wide receiver Darryl Stingley was paralyzed for life on an infamous hit by Raiders defensive back Jack Tatum during a preseason game in Oakland. The squad went on to rattle off seven straight wins to take its first division title in 15 years with an 11-5 record. Horace Ivory, a second-year running back out of Oklahoma, scored 11 rushing touchdowns for the high-scoring offense.
