1978: Tragedy and some triumph
Before the regular season even started, the Patriots suffered a devastating loss when wide receiver Darryl Stingley was paralyzed for life on an infamous hit by Raiders defensive back Jack Tatum during a preseason game in Oakland. Horace Ivory, a second-year running back out of Oklahoma, scored 11 rushing touchdowns for the high-scoring offense.
