Eyes on Adam
Sports radio 850 WEEI in Boston reported that kicker Adam Vinatieri has reached an agreement in principle to join the Indianapolis Colts. ESPN has confirmed the agreement in principle.
The Colts confirmed the agreement late on Tuesday.
Also, receiver Tim Dwight has agreed to a four-year deal with the Jets. The deal includes a $750,000 signing bonus.
The Patriots had hoped to re-sign Vinatieri and his agreement with the Colts is a major blow. The free-agent market is thin, with Paul Edinger (Vikings) one of the few proven, cold-weather kickers available. The team has already met with Edinger, a sixth-year pro who has spent time with Chicago (2000-2004) and Minnesota (2005), at Gillette Stadium. The visit was likely arranged as a possible contingency if things didn't work out with Vinatieri.
Edinger was 25-of-34 in 2005, with three game-winning kicks in the final seconds.
Mike Vanderjagt (Colts) is also available, but his struggles with kickoffs would seemingly make him a bad fit.
