Strait talk

The Patriots worked out free-agent defensive back Derrick Strait on Saturday.

Strait, who opened the season with the Jets, has had quite a year.

He was initially traded to the Browns on Aug. 14, but the deal was voided when the player he was traded for -- running back Lee Suggs -- didn't pass the Jets' physical. Strait returned to the Jets, and was in the starting lineup for two games at safety. But the Jets waived Strait on Oct. 11 to sign free-agent cornerback Hank Poteat.

Strait was then claimed by the Buccaneers, but was released on Oct. 17.

The 5-foot-11, 189-pound Strait has the position flexibility to play cornerback and safety, which is a trait the Patriots often like in their defensive backs. After playing in college at Oklahoma, he entered the league as a third-round pick of the Jets in 2004.
