Meriweather quick hits

Some quick hits on Brandon Meriweather from the Pro Football Weekly scouting guide:

  • Entered Miami at 160 pounds and played three games as a true freshman in 2002 before receiving a medical redshirt following an ankle injury.

  • Played in all 13 games (1 start) in 2003.

  • Played in all 12 games (7 starts) in 2004.

  • In 2005, did not start the opener due to a hamstring injury before starting the next 11 games at strong safety. Led the team with 115 tackles. Was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back in college football.

  • Meriweather noticed a suspicious car parked outside his campus home at 6:30 a.m. on July 21, 2006, and when he went out to investigate with teammate Willie Cooper, an assailant crouched next to the house, jumped up and shot Cooper in the buttocks. At the time, Meriweather pulled a pistol out of his pants pocket and fired three times. He had the legal right to protect himself and his property, so police pressed no charges.

  • Started 12 games in 2006, with three starts coming at cornerback.

  • Was suspended one game in 2006 for his involvement in an on-field brawl vs. Florida International.
