With the NFL draft set for April 28-29, this is the time of year when all the hard work by scouts comes to the forefront.
A snapshot look at the Patriots' scouts (information from team's media guide), all of whom report to vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli:
Marvin Allen, area scout -- A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, he just concluded his 14th season with the Patriots, and 10th in the player personnel department. Allen was originally drafted by the Patriots in the 11th round of the 1988 draft after playing running back at Tulane.
Larry Cook, scouting consultant -- Originally joined the Patriots' scouting department Feb. 1, 1985 as a personnel scout on Dick Steinberg's staff. Has been with the organization since, and has spent 44 years in football.
Thomas Dimitroff, director of college scouting -- Joined the Patriots in 2002 as a national scout before earning a bump up to director. Just concluded his 17th season in player personnel and is a promising future candidate to become a vice president of player personnel in the NFL.
Brian Flores, pro scout -- Former Boston College linebacker joined the Patriots (2004) upon his graduation and was a scouting assistant before moving to the pro side.
Tim Heffelfinger, area scout -- Former Northwestern defensive tackle just concluded his ninth season as a scout and second season with the Patriots.
Frantzy Jourdain, area scout -- Former University of Rhode Island running back (1993-97) has spent the last four years with the Patriots' personnel department and second year as an area scout.
Bucko Kilroy, scouting consultant -- The 2006 season marked Kilroy's 64th in the NFL, and he has been a part of all five Patriots Super Bowl teams. He was originally hired by the Patriots in 1971 as player personnel director.
Nancy Meier, director of scouting administration -- Having concluded her 32nd season with the Patriots, Meier is the longest tenured full-time employee on staff.
Jay Muraco, college scouting coordinator -- A Kent State graduate, he has worked the last 11 seasons in the NFL and the last seven with the Patriots. Volunteered to work with the Browns personnel department from 1992-95 when Bill Belichick was coach.
Jim Nagy, area scout -- A sports management major at the University of Michigan, he concluded his fifth season with the Patriots this year. Initially spent three years (1998-2001) as the director of NFL scouting for War Room Scouting Inc.
Kyle O'Brien, area scout -- Harvard and Phillips Andover Academy graduate, he joined the Patriots full-time in 2002 as a scouting assistant. His first job with the team came as a player personnel intern in 2000.
Monti Ossenfort, area scout -- A four-year letterman and two-year starter at quarterback for the University of Minnesota, he has five years of NFL scouting experience, the last two coming with the Patriots.
Adam Peters, area scout -- A native of Cupertino, Calif., he has worked for the Patriots the last four seasons. Before joining the Patriots, he served as a football operations graduate assisant at UCLA, where he played defensive end from 1999-2001.
Bob Quinn, regional scout -- A native of Norwood, Mass., he concluded his seventh season in the Patriots' personnel department and third season as a regional scout. Completed his undergraduate and post-graduate studies at UConn.
Jonathan Robinson, regional scout -- Joined the Patriots in 2002 as an area scout after three seasons coaching at Nicholls (La.) State. A native of Union City, Tenn., he played three seasons for Southeast Missouri State as a defensive lineman.
Brian Smith, special assignments -- A native of Marathon, Fla., he joined the Patriots in 2000 and has served a variety of roles. Played football at Davidson (N.C.) College and graduated from Providence College. Last year marked his first season handling special assignments.
Scouting assistants DuJuan Daniels and Tim Pichette also are part of the Patriots' scouting team. Frank Leonard was a special assignment scout who left the team in January to join the Kansas State football staff as an assistant.
