Five to finish
FOXBOROUGH -- Wrapping up Saturday's rookie minicamp with five quick-hit thoughts:
In one corner of the Dana Farber Fieldhouse during practice, it was the Dante Scarnecchia School of Young Offensive Linemen. The demanding Scarnecchia ran Clint Oldenburg, Corey Hilliard and Mike Elgin through various positional drills, and one that caught our eye was an agility drill in which Scarnecchia had the players moving side to side and forward and back. Scarnecchia offered praise to Elgin, a seventh-round draft choice from Iowa, during that drill.
Bill Belichick on Scarnecchia: "I don't think there’s a better offensive line coach than Dante. I haven't worked with one. ... He’s been doing it a long time and he's great at it. There isn’t anybody's opinion that I value more than Dante's."
Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli, football research director Ernie Adams, and some of the team's scouts were present at practice.
Bill O'Brien, who joined the Patriots' coaching staff this year as an offensive assistant, spent a majority of time working with running backs coach Ivan Fears.
Boston College's Larry Anam, who signed as an undrafted free agent, worked out at cornerback. He said it was nice to be close to home. "It probably took 35 minutes to drive down here," he said. "It's not a big transition for me. I'm familiar with the city and am happy with that."
We'll plan on checking back in Sunday.
The schedule looks like this: Bill Belichick press conference (11:30-noon), media access to locker room (11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) and media access to practice (1-2 p.m.).
EXTRA POINT: The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that linebacker Junior Seau will re-sign with the Patriots next week, pending a physical.
