Brady: longest drive

BOLTON –- Steady rain did not stop hundreds of golfers from hitting the course today in the Patriots Charitable Foundation tournament at The International in Bolton, Mass.

One of the highlights of the morning came when quarterback Tom Brady, who arrived in an Audi S8 with Michigan license plates, won the long-drive competition.

Brady managed to get a laugh out of seemingly everyone in attendance after reaching the finals against backup quarterback Matt Cassel and defensive back Eugene Wilson. After Cassel and Wilson shanked their final attempts -- with Brady yelling as Cassel took his attempt -- Brady stepped to the tee and did what quarterbacks do: he picked up the ball and threw it, as if to mock the competition.

After the laughter subsided, Brady cranked a 307-yard drive to win the honors.

Brady was not made available to speak with reporters, although several players did speak to the media, including inside linebacker Tedy Bruschi, safety Rodney Harrison (last year’s long-drive champ), defensive linemen Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren, outside linebacker Rosevelt Colvin and offensive tackle Matt Light.

Wilfork joked that he was modeling his golf game after Vijay Singh.

“With this weather, you have to have great technique and he’s a great technician,” he said.

As is tradition at this event, members from all departments of the Patriots were present, including head coach Bill Belichick and chairman/CEO Robert Kraft.

Cornerback Asante Samuel was not spotted at the event. Samuel’s situation was one of the topics that players were asked about.

“You pay attention to it, because he’s a teammate of yours, and a teammate of yours that helped you win football games and you want him back, to help you to continue to win football games,” said linebacker Tedy Bruschi. “That’s all you can really think about. There is nothing you can really say or do to remedy the situation at all. It’s between him and the organization.”

Receiver Randy Moss was present, although he was not made available to speak with reporters. Troy Brown was also present.

We’ll plan on transcribing some of the interviews and passing along some thoughts later in the day.
