Mula file

We're closing on the point of the NFL calendar when the Patriots usually begin contract negotiations with their draft choices (the team has yet to officially sign any of their 9 choices).

Jack Mula, whose official title is general counsel/player personnel, leads the negotiations from the team side. Some quick hits on Mula:

  • Joined the Patriots in 1999.

  • Has served as primary negotiator for the player contracts of each of the team's draft choices and has worked in concert with vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli on veteran and free agent contracts.

  • Serves as the Patriots' legal and business liaison to the NFL Management Council and league office.

  • Played a significant role in the planning and development of Gillette Stadium, working with local and state government and the business and residential communities in planning for site access and game-day operations.

  • Prior to joining the Patriots, served as a player agent. Doug Flutie, Fred Smerlas, Mike Ruth, Steve DeOssie, Priest Holmes, Qadry Ismail and Raghib Ismail were among his clients.

  • Raised in Waltham, Mass., and was a high school teammate of Smerlas on the 1975 team that sent 10 players to Division I college football programs.

  • Attended UMass-Amherst, earning a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1980.
