5 from practice
Here are five observations that caught the eye from this morning's practice:
1) Thomas in pass coverage. Linebacker Adalius Thomas comes advertised as a versatile player, and we saw a bit of that when he lined up in the middle and dropped into pass coverage against tight end Matt Kranchick in an 11-on-11 drill. As quarterback Matt Cassel delivered the ball to Kranchick, Thomas reached out and deflected the pass away, about 10-12 yards from the line of scrimmage. Nice play.
2) Honoring the memory of Marquise Hill. Every Patriots player wore a 91 decal on their helmet. The No. 91 was worn by the late Marquise Hill and has not been issued to another player since Hill died in a Jet Ski accident in May.
3) Eyes on Moss. Receiver Randy Moss didn't catch every pass thrown his way -- he kicked the ball in disgust after dropping one Tom Brady delivery -- but he appears to be transitioning nicely into the Patriots' offense. Building off June's minicamp, Moss continues to put on a clinic when it comes to catching the ball away from his body or at its highest point.
4) Gaffney benefits. With receiver Donte' Stallworth not practicing, that created expanded opportunity for others. From our view, Jabar Gaffney -- who is seemingly battling for a roster spot at one of the top competitions in all of camp -- benefitted the most.
5) Crowds. It was packed here at Gillette, with few seats available in the bleachers (capacity: around 3,000) and fewer on the hillside (capacity: around 2,000). Some who arrived a bit late had to stand as there weren't enough seats. Total attendance: 6,160. The Patriots also have drawn national media interest, with Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News) and Don Banks (Sports Illustrated) among the national writers in attendance. ESPN is also here.
