5 from practice
Here are five observations from today's second training camp practice, which was moved inside the Dana-Farber Field House. More than 2,000 fans showed up before getting word the practice was moved inside, so they watched on the scoreboard inside Gillette Stadium.
1) Slower tempo. This practice was essentially a walkthrough, as players weren't in pads and the offense remained on one side of the Field House and the defense on the other. The pace of the work was half speed.
2) PUP sightings. Most of the players on the physically unable to perform list watched the walkthrough, although we didn't spot tight end David Thomas. That could mean Thomas is a bit further away from a full recovery.
3) Brady & Moss. During a break as other players on offense worked, quarterback Tom Brady and receiver Randy Moss chatted it up. You can see the chemistry between the two continuing to develop, both on and off the field. Brady joked earlier in the day that he beat Moss in a Saturday poker game.
4) O-line depth. Brady took snaps behind both the top and backup offensive line during the walkthrough. Impressive stat on the second unit line: the players comprising the unit have appeared in a total of 125 games, with 34 starts.
5) Punt return crew. Bam Childress, Kevin Faulk and Wes Welker were back returning punts. The Patriots averaged third in the NFL in this category last season, with Faulk taking 31 of the team's 36 returns.
MONDAY PLAN: The Patriots have one practice on Monday (2:30 p.m.). Patriots coach Bill Belichick will hold a press conference at 11:15 a.m. We'll plan on posting our next update after Belichick's press conference.
