Bill's take

FOXBOROUGH –- Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his daily press conference (11:15 a.m.) at Gillette Stadium and opened with the following statement:

“OK, yesterday we were back on the field twice, kind of another training camp day. Today, we’ll move into the Tennessee preparations, kind of like what we talked about last week. It’s still part of that same situation where we’re trying to balance some new installations, some moving along in training camp, just getting ready for general things for the season with preparing for an opponent, while trying to evaluate our players and build a little depth by utilizing guys in secondary positions or other positions of depth on our roster as it relates to the kicking game as well as either side of the ball.

"We’re kind of juggling all those balls, and getting ready for Tennessee. And still trying to catch up on some loose ends that are season-preparation type items. That’s kind of the deal here.”

Belichick was asked about the Patriots facing the Titans and how the teams had some bad blood in the 2006 season finale. He was asked if he had concerns of bad feelings between the teams spilling over in the preseason.

“Right now, I’m just concerned about our football team, trying to get better, and do a better job of coaching them, and getting our team ready to play the opening game against the Jets and the 16-game regular season,” he said. “That’s really my biggest concern. There are a lot of things last year that happened and we’ve moved on from all of them.”

A few other nuggets from Belichick:

  • Asked about preparing for Titans quarterback Vince Young, Belichick acknowledged there will be time spent in practice to prepare players because he is a unique talent. “It’s no different than when we played [Michael] Vick last year in the preseason,” he said. “You get ready for a player that I think you do have to pay a little special attention to, because of his style of play, particularly at that position.”

  • Asked about special teams captain Larry Izzo, and how he’s entering his 12th season despite not being a regular on defense, Belichick said: “Larry is very professional, a very competitive guy. I think he’s probably one of the most professional guys I’ve ever been around.”

Practice is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. We’ll plan on filing our next update at that time.
