Maroney progress

FOXBOROUGH -- Running back Laurence Maroney has shed his red, non-contact jersey, a positive sign that indicates progress in his recovery from offseason shoulder surgery.

Linebacker Eric Alexander (shoulder) also shed the red, non-contact jersey for the first time.

A few other notes from the full-pads workout (the media was present for stretching and positional drills), which was held on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium:

  • WR Jabar Gaffney, who came up limping after a second-quarter reception in Friday's preseason game, was not present.

  • OL Russ Hochstein, who came up hobbling after lining up at fullback on Heath Evans' 2-yard touchdown run and did not play the rest of the game, was not present. On the flip side, OL Billy Yates was present for a full-pads practice for the first time since Aug. 6.

  • WR Randy Moss was not present. He joined a group that included CB Asante Samuel, S Rashad Baker, DB Larry Anam, TE Kyle Brady, DE Ty Warren and DE Mike Wright.

  • None of the five players on the physically unable to perform list -- DL Richard Seymour, TE David Thomas, CB Eddie Jackson and WRs Chad Jackson and Troy Brown -- were present.
