Take 5

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his daily press conference (10:45 a.m.) and the media had access to the locker room after that (11:15-11:55 a.m.).

Here are five nuggets from the scene here at Gillette Stadium:

  • 1) Rodney doesn't mince words. What does safety Rodney Harrison -- who drew one of the largest media crowds of the day -- think about the expectations placed on the Patriots by the media? "We don't care what you think or what the public thinks," Harrison responded. "In 2001, [the team] won the Super Bowl but came back the next year and didn't have a great season. You guys were calling them bums. I heard all the names. Then I came in 2003 and we won the Super Bowl, so we were great again. So we went from great to bums to great again. So who cares what you guys think? With all due respect, it just matters about 53 guys in this locker room, the coaches, just trying to get better."

  • 2) Moss walks through. Receiver Randy Moss spent some time at the game table in the locker room, mingling with his teammates while wearing a towel over his head. Moss, who hasn't practiced since pulling up in an Aug. 1 practice, declined to answer questions when asked at this locker.

  • 3) Light's on. The offensive line is looking to bounce back from a subpar outing last Friday against the Titans, and left tackle Matt Light held court with the media today. He noted that the third preseason game is "definitely the one where you see some extended playing time" and feels it will be a good opportunity for the line. "Obviously, we have a lot of things that we want to improve," he said. "These guys have played together for a long time and they have a great system and a great coaching staff. They're a very physical and fast defense, so we'll have our hands full."

  • 4) Belichick on Gostkowski. Unlike last year, Stephen Gostkowski is the lone kicker in training camp. Coach Bill Belichick said: "I think Stephen has had a good camp. He works hard and is a very mature and dependable guy. I don't have any problems at all with what he's done in training camp. I think like everybody else, he has a ways to go with his game. But I think he's worked hard, I think he's improved, and has kicked well through the overall course of camp."

  • 5) Kelley sees progress. The race for roster spots at receiver continues to evolve and Kelley Washington feels he's putting his best forward. "I don't consider myself a starter, I don't consider myself on the bubble, I just go out and work every single day and let the coaches and organization evaluate how they can use me and go from there," he said. "Personally, I think I've grown with every practice. I've cut down on my assignment errors. I just try to work hard and put myself in a position where the coaches can count on me whatever the situation may be. That's what I want to continue to do."
