12 for No. 12

Quarterback Tom Brady has thrown just 12 incomplete passes this season. His 79.7 completion percentage leads the NFL.

A closer look at the incomplete passes makes Brady's start even more impressive. Here is a chart we put together for today's Boston Globe:

  • 3 throw-aways
  • 3 dropped passes
  • 2 thrown behind receiver (1 of which was intercepted)
  • 1 underthrown pass
  • 1 overthrown pass
  • 1 receiver slipping
  • 1 tipped away by defender

With all the talk about the passing game in the past 2 weeks, something tells me that the running game will be featured against Buffalo.

Weren't those all 'intended' for Dante Stallworth? C'mon man, I got faith in you! Catch something significant!!!

What was the highest completion % for a season?

    Gomda said:

Brady has been phenomenal this season, I'm predicting 4 touchdowns against buffalo, although i wouldn't be suprised to see maroney get some goal line carries. How about that offensive line? What protection! Dante might be the most underated coach in the league.

How is the preseason stregnth of schedule shaping up now? We should not even metion it anymore Mike.

    Chris said:

It's amazing what happens when Brady is given "real" receivers!

    Jarrod said:

Hey Mike, how does an interception count? Thanks, and keep up the great work with the blog.

Hey Mike -- This is really cool. Thanks. Patriots fans really value your hard work.

    Drew Bledsoe said:

Ok, it was a good move to start Brady ahead of me.

This is going to be (obviously) Brady's best year ever. This season is going to cement him as the greatest QB ever to step on the gridiron. Reg season MVP and 4 time Superbowl Champion. Thank God for the Pats; without them I would be depressed about the Red Sox.

    Steve said:

he's trash - no good quarterback wouldover throw OR underthrow a receiver. ;)

    Paul said:

And just think that Brady and his receivers aren't in midseason form yet. Very scary for opposing teams. Mike, any news on when we will see more of Kelley Washington. Thanks.

    John said:

Only 1 pass has been touched by a defender? How amazing are these stats? They have to invent a new word to describe these numbers. How about "incomprehensiblistic"?

    Richard said:

Comments are a great addition to your blog Mike. Good idea to monitor them too :)

It is hard to believe that Brady can keep this up. As unbelievable as it seems, I think that the Jets and Chargers forgot about Randy Moss, at least in relation to the threat he represented. As a previous poster said it might be a good time to go with the run against Buffalo. Even if they do that I can see at least one TD from Moss.

    BK said:

How come Brady doesn't get T. Brady on the back of the uniform and Kyle Brady get K. Brady? Doesn't it cause confusion?

    SSgt Robinson, Z. S. said:

Ok, let's say Randy has an outstanding year, and we go on to win the superbowl. Do you think the Pats keep him long term if the price is right? Oh, and what do you think will happens to Troy & C. Jackson this season if the receivers continue to perform well?

    John A said:

Watch out for the trap game. Buffalo should have beat Denver.
The Everett injury was a major distraction. The team better be ready for a Buffalo team that will be fighting for a win.
I'm sure BB will be telling them this.

    Boston Buckeye said:

To bk......my guess is we do not need the "T" on tom bradys uniform...heck i don't even need brady just that number 12!!!!

It's obvious to me what the most significant change so far this year over last year, Gisele Bundchen. If this isn't an endorsement as to why every man should date a supermodel, I don't know what is. If I only had a big dimple in my chin.

Thanks Mike for the comments sections, this saves me having to annoy you with emails from Ottawa, Canada. If you look back at the best the Pats have played over the past 7 years it's when they've had a chip on their shoulders. I hope Rodney is stirring the pot behind the scenes.

I firmly believe that WAY MORE teams are doing what the Pats are being accused of these days but for whatever reason the Pats are being made an example of. Lead 'em Tommy and let's go after the 72 Dolphins record while we're at it. Bring 'em on!!!! GO PATS GO!!!!

    Mike,

In week one you had listed Matt Gutierrez as inactive for the Patriots-Jets opener, however, I noticed that he was on the field for the final play when taking a knee. I am positive that it was Gutierrez on the field because the announcers commented on Matt Cassel being punished for not successfully holding the snap down on a FG attempt. Could you please research your post and reply.

Maroney could take some lessons from Sammy Morris about hitting the hole. Enough with the dancing!

    BalsamDoug said:

Have you guys ever heard of "irrational exuberance"? They've only played two games, and the Jets weren't much of a test. Let's wait before we crown them kings of the universe.

    Frosty said:

A member of the Boston media has repeatedly made it clear that BB deserves the bad press he is getting because of the way he treats the media in press conferences. While this sounds reasonable on the surface, isn't it skating dangerously close to being bought off? Sure, it is impossible to get rid of an unintentional bias to someone who is pleasant to you, but this sounds like a deliberate manipulaiton of the news: "If you aren't nice to me, I'll write bad stuff about you."

Any reportorial thoughts? Or is this too hot a potato to handle?

Does any Patriot fan out there remember that 4-0 start after the first Super Bowl year? most of you should be sporting big old pom-poms. Try to realize that this year's team, like evry year's team, will go thru some growing pains eventually. This year it might be the running game, or maybe Moss pulls a hamstring, or maybe a linebacker goes down, or another DB. All this talk about records and streaks and the like are foolish and near sighted. To be honest, the pats haven't played a powerhouse team yet. San Diego's DB's are second class, and their reciever's are too. Has Bill Belichick taught us NE Patriot Fans nothing? Enjoy the season. It's fun. But don't go around talking about records. My two cents.

What about the play against the Chargers when the ball slipped out of Brady's hand on a pump fake? Everyone dove for the ball like it was a fumble, but it was ruled an incompletion. I don't see that in your breakdown.

    Sarah said:

Will this FINALLY be the year that Brady is considered for MVP? Also how idiotic is everyone who says that Manning is the better QB? Now that we finally have a receiving corps you're seeing how amazing what Brady did all those years with no help really is!

Thanks for your breakdown of snaps by formation. I also like the data on the ST players, that you supplied by a request from a fan... I'd only add that the who the key ST players, the gunners are, would be useful too... A suggestion for a topic(s) for a column for you: A specific ST, and the responsibilities of each position on the ST...

    Mike,

Great idea. How about removing the word "said" after every poster's name? It's really annoying. It would be nicer to know the poster's location instead (then you'll have to ask for the location when someone post a comment). Thanks, and keep it up!

    Mr. Kearney,

That 4-0 team in 2002 had no defense and were very lucky to get to 4-0. This team is different because it does everything well. Not saying they are going undefeated, but they won't fade either.

I believe that would count as "underthrown," Glenn. ; )

Great idea with adding comments, Mike. Keep up the good work. I would be really interested to see defensive groupings broken down as well.

Honestly, if you can read this list without feeling the urge to (inadvisably, I might add) sing it to the tune of "The 12 Days of Christmas" well then I am duly impressed.

The number one QB in Patriots History was probably either Babe Parilli or Drew Bledsoe, but after this season barring injury Tom Brady will assume the lead permanently.I've been watching the Patriots since 1960 and they have had some really good teams but as far as personnel is concerned this might be the hardest working most talented team of all.

    Sal,
To answer your question about Matt Gutierrez being inactive in week 1. Matt was listed as "inactive / emergency (third) quarterback". Teams are allowed one such designation each week. The "emergency (third) qb" can enter the game after the 3rd quarter.
My guess is that we won't see Cassell coming in to mop up for last play -- they'll let Gutierrez do that.

    Pete Kearney said:

    mcarlso,

in hindsight we realize that 2002 team had no defense. This 2008 team does have weaknesses, they just haven't been exposed yet. Now, it might not be a huge weakness like in 2002, but they really haven't beat anybody. I think you'll see what I mean when SD barely beats Green Bay this weekend. On the other hand, maybe I'm wrong, this team will go 16-0 and be labeled the best ever, lol. That's why it's so fun. Take care.

These numbers are incredible by Brady. Think about it. Based on these stats, he's only thrown 4 bad balls so far. That's 2 a game. That's efficiency at it's best!
