Chad checks in
FOXBOROUGH -- Bengals receiver Chad Johnson held a conference call with the New England media today (1:15 p.m.). Unlike last year, when he asked the media to pass along some playful, trash-talking messages to safety Rodney Harrison and cornerback Asante Samuel, he kept things low key.
"Rodney is not playing?" Johnson asked. "Then I don't have any messages."
Yet Johnson did have one message for Bill Belichick.
"Tell Coach I said I love him, and that I'm looking forward to a great challenge," he said. "This is more than a football game. This is going to be a chess match. I don't really think it's between the players. This is a chess match for the coaches, who is going to make the right moves at the right time."
Johnson shared some strong feelings on the NFL's investigation into the Patriots' videotaping procedures.
"That videotaping thing, it doesn't matter," he said passionately. "OK, say you do know the signals. You still have to go out and execute the defense. Forget that. Take the cameras away -- you're talking about a great football team that has great coaches. Throw that camera bull out the window. They'd be 3-0 right now regardless of that damn camera."
Told he might be in the minority based on other comments made by players around the league, Johnson said: "Be for real. Be for real. They're a great team offensively and defensively. They are a great team and there is a reason why they are where they are. It's not because of no damn camera."
Johnson said he didn't have any celebrations planned, because the Bengals are 1-2 and it's not a time for celebrations.
Near the end of the 16-minute call, Johnson was asked his thoughts on playing Monday night. The bright lights and nationally televised audience seemed made for him, he was told.
"Most definitely," he said playfully. "It's one thing to already love the game, but to give me the spotlight on Monday night to play, you just don't do those things."
PRACTICE REPORT: Every Patriots player was present for the media-access portion of today's practice. ... The media was present for stretching and one set of warmup drills. ... The workout was held in full pads.

(39)Wow......I definitely didn't expect that out Chad. Glad to hear that at least one player thinks that the camera doesn't matter......
I love Ocho-Cinco.
Meanwhile, the NY Post still has the * next to the Pats in the standings and in their NFL Lines with the caption "Caught Cheating." Classy paper
Chad Jackson, eccentric? Yes, but when it comes down to it, he's clearly a bright guy.
By far my favorite player in the league. The man is trying to bring a little more fun back into pro football.
If we lose Moss next year is there any way we can get Ocho on the Pats roster?
Those are impressive comments, he seems to get it. I've always wondered if his act is indeed just an act and comments like those go a long way to confirming that. Should be a fun game.
When is Chad's deal up? If Moss or Stallworth are gone 1 to 2 years from now, think Belichick would bring him aboard?
The thing that seperates Chad Johnson from other players in the NFL is that he is actually enjoying himself. His celebrations don't mock the opposition, he's just having fun. While others are worried about "staright cash homie" Chad is planning new ways to reach paydirt and make people laugh. Before the Pats loaded up on wideouts I thought Chad would make a great addition to the team whenever his contract runs out. He is the NFL's Manny Ramirez (when Manny actually plays). Too bad he has to face the Pats on Monday night, cause you know he would put on a show against any other defense when the world is watching.
Is it me, or do you see 85 in a pats uniform someday?
That's a class act! Thanks, Chad. You showed true sportsmanship!
ocho cinco is great....
he's playful but he's classy. i say when we cut stallworth next year, we should get ocho cinco...he needs to die his hair to blonde though
It's all boiling down to the fact that chad wants to come here once his contract is up. YES, i love it!
one of the few over-hyped superstars who i genuinely enjoy watching play
I don't think we'll see Chad in a Pats' uniform anytime soon, even though Patriot Nation would be ecstatic. I have a ton of respect and admiration for Chad Johnson. He's a guy who truly loves the game, and just wants to make it fun to watch. His pre-game "trash talking", and end zone antics aren't designed to create conflict or draw negative attention to himself or his team. He's just having fun and wants us to have fun with him. People compare him to T.O. sometimes, and they couldn't be more wrong. T.O. does what he does because he only cares about himself, while Chad does it for the fans.
Unlike some of the other receivers in this league who like to show off, #85 never does it in a taunting or offensive manner. He's just fun to watch, fun to listen to, and should have a flying Elvis on his helmet in a few years!!!
i have always liked chad he is a great football player and he has alot of fun while playing the game. I hope someday he is wearing a pats jersey
What's more dangerous than a BB-coached team? Answer: BB networking and mingling with star players at the 2007 probowl.
BB and the patriots are now known as the Harvard University among NFL veterans. They all want to go there someday, especially if they are on a mediocre club now.
If it seems strange to you that veterans from other teams are paying BB alot of respect, it is because they want to lobby to be on the pats someday.
Chad and BB were on the 07 Probowl roster, and you know they were networking. This ensures pats fans many more years of insurance. We will have all the veterans line up at our door.
Go pats!!
Not only is he very entertaining to watch but he is very smart! talking trash about the patriots only give them motivation to shut you down as LT and others have recently learned. Would love to see Chad on the pats on day but it would be cheating, just like it is cheating for the pats to have Moss on the team!
Seems like he's hedging his bets towards being a Patriot. Hopefully sooner than later. Can you blame him? Every player with talent can now see the genius of BB and his system. If they want a ring, they better make their way to N.E. before 2013 (unless BB signs on for longer). Randy Moss is leading the way, taking a pay cut and getting a ring (I know I'm getting ahead of myself) and has now plowed the street for other high talent players. Bring on Chad in 2008! Wouldn't that be something!
Chad is signed through 2010, and 2011 is option year. In order to get him, they'd have to give up a 1, a 2 and probably some cash.
Regardless of Chad's motivation for his comments, I, for one, am glad to read them. I grew up in RI and am a huge Pats fan who currently lives in Atlanta. I constantly hear the whole Camera-Gate thing. Chad made the point I have been making all along. Regardless of the signals, the players still have to go out and execute. A WR still needs to beat the cornerback to make the play regardless of if the team knos the play or not.
BIG UPS to CJ. Much respect to Chad to tell it like it is REGARDLESS what other haters say. CJ lines up against Pats so who better to know 1st hand BB & Co's schemes. There is a method to his madness & maybe 1 day it will be lining up on Pat's side of ball. GO PATS!
I think Chad Johnson is being quiet now because he knows the Bengals need to focus and can't afford any distractions. Even if he does think the Patriots are cheaters, he won't say it until afterwards so it is not a distraction.
Mike, I don't agree.
If you are guarding someone 1 on 1, it is easier to guard them if you know the route.
If you are trying to get open, it's easier to do so if you know where the holes in the zone are.
If you are running, it is easier to run away from the blitz.
If you are defending the run, it is easier to slant in that direction.
Not a big fan of hot-dogs in general but have to say chad showed a wee bit of class by acknowledging that end zone dances are in poor taste for a 1-2 team.
I always liked him, but I still didn't expect such a sensible answer to the camera question. he's a top-notch player who dominates while clearly having lots of fun. I wish there were more players like him not just in football, but in all pro sports.
I think right now Chad Johnson is the #1 receiver in the NFL, and that no team can stop him in man to man coverage. I hope we bring our A game Monday Night as the Bengals always seem to play their best at home during primetime.
Bengals fan here. I don't think Chad would want to leave Cincinnati. He is signed to a long contract, and quite frankly, I think he loves the city. Good luck Monday Night, you are going to need it!
WHODEY
Dick Butkus was on Mike & Mike this morning, and he said the camera thing was ridiculous as well. He said it's been going on since he was playing, and that he kind of laughed the whole thing off.
As far as Ocho Cinco, I think his head is on right. He's eccentric and intelligent, although an outsider looking in may view him as a goofball. I personally think that he has a good thing in Cincinnati. He has a good, young offense, Carlson Palmer, and a defense in the works. They put up with his antics, albeit innocent, and the fans love him. I don't see him going anywhere else, even New England.
I just checked the New York Post website, and there's no asterisk I could find...Where is it??
Chad knows THE COACH has already won 5 Bowls. Parcells was just along for the ride with Belichik's Giants. Parcells has a career losing record with out The Man.
I don't see how you can say illegally taping the other teams signals is not a big deal. In my opinion, even if it does not make a big difference, it is still blatently cheating.
best touchdown dance ever was done by Chad
Juraman Go To NFL Standings In NY Post Next To Patriots There Is An Asterisk Bottom Is Says Cheaters
Did You Know Day After Pats Beat Chargers NY Post Didn't Write About It. Didn't Mention Pats Win At All. Nothing.
This Monday Post Had Pats Win Over Bills.
Heading To Article Said Cheaters 3-0.
Guess Paper Is On Mangini's Payroll.
Im sorry, but everyone who posted, praising chad johnson as a class act seems to have amnesia. Do we suddenly forget all his exploits. Dont get me wrong, i am as big a pats fan as they come, but reading his comments, i felt like it was all an act. Ya, it said everything i that i have felt since the scandel had come out, but his statements are loaded. Looking foward to seeing no ocho cinco celebrations.
Chad will finish his career in Cincinnati. He owns that town, and the Bengals will be serious contenders once they get their defense on track.
Chad may be outspoken and outrageous at times but one thing he isn't is dumb. Why give more stuff Pats can use to motivate themselves? He trash talks them last year and they got spanked. So he keeps his mouth shut and decides to play. Good for him.
Quoting Ryan:
"[Chad's] pre-game "trash talking", and end zone antics aren't designed to create conflict or draw negative attention to himself or his team. He's just having fun and wants us to have fun with him. People compare him to T.O. sometimes, and they couldn't be more wrong. T.O. does what he does because he only cares about himself, while Chad does it for the fans."
Exactly. You know when Bill Belichick gets into it as he did last year, Chad's just doing it for entertainment and not trying to disrespect the other team. And to everyone who says that he's only making semsible comments about the camera because he's too smart to p*** off the Patriots, he made similar comments when this thing first happneed three weeks ago. He means what he says. I too would love to see ocho cinco in red, white, and blue someday, but he's got a great situation in Cinci with Carso Palmer for the time being. That team is fun to watch, so long as their defense stinks when they play us!
Gotta love Ocho Cinco!
