FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick (10:50 a.m.) and quarterback Tom Brady (11:45 a.m.) were among those answering questions from the media today, and one of the topics was the team's explosive offense.
The Patriots rank second in the NFL in total yards per game (838 total) -- with a No. 3 ranking for passing yards (560 total) and a No. 8 ranking for rushing yards (278 total).
Brady touched on how the offense has taken shape through two weeks, noting that it's a slightly different approach than the team has had in past years.
"I think the thing about this offense is that we try to morph into what the guys on this team are good at. Deion [Branch] is entirely different than what Randy [Moss] is. We're not doing the same things with Randy that Deion did. I just don't think it would be fair to him.
"We've found different ways over the years to be successful, and I think this year we're finding new ways as well.
"The passing game, over the years, we've done some good things. I'd hate to think we were crap over the last seven years. We led the league in passing a few years. It's just a matter of it's a different style. I think this year we're expanding the field a little bit vertically. Everything has its strengths and weaknesses. I'm happy that we're completing at a high percentage and with a high yards per attempt, because that's how you become efficient in the passing game -- a high completion percentage, and we're not in a lot of third downs, which is good."
Brady likes the balance the Patriots have achieved between the run and the pass. He said it all starts with the run, which sets up other possibilities, such as play-action.
"Hopefully we can continue to be creative and to mix things up," he said. "As long as the different players are all capable of being to make the plays when they have one-on-one coverage, it's going to be a tough offense to stop."
At the same time, Brady passed along one of the messages Bill Belichick had for the team.
Said Brady: "It's only been two games and as Coach said this morning, I hope our goals weren't just to win two games this year, which is a great point."
