Final ruling

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff September 13, 2007 08:25 PM

Here is the final ruling from the NFL:

  • Bill Belichick has been fined $500,000 by the NFL. That is the maximum amount under the NFL Constitution and By-Laws for violating league policy last Sunday on the use of equipment to videotape an opposing team’s offensive or defensive signals.

  • The Patriots have been fined $250,000 by the NFL.

  • The Patriots will give up their first-round pick in 2008 if they make the playoffs. If they don't make the playoffs, they will surrender their second- and third-round picks.

  • Belichick will not be suspended.

“This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field,” Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter to the Patriots.

"I specifically considered whether to impose a suspension on Coach Belichick," Goodell also wrote. "I have determined not to do so, largely because I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice, or multiple draft choices, is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension."

    1. It is obvious there is a double standard in the NFL and I am appalled that such a disgusting individual is getting away with this. If any of us were to cheat at our jobs like this we would immediately be fired!! You know it and I know it and I am sick of the lack of standards in the NFL.

    1. Geting away with it? First, if you know anything about the rules, it was a grey area where the Pats were taping. Losing a first round pick and $500k fine is no joke. You try getting hit with a fine 20% of your salary and see how you feel. Fool.

    1. This is much more repulsive, and a larger, blatant disrespect for the sport we love than steroid use. Taking steroids is disgusting and you should be banned from sports for at LEAST two full seasons, but..... this is an attempt for one man to make himself better at the sport he loves. Whether it's for money or just to be the best doesn't matter.

But breaking rules like the ones bill did is blatant cheating on a much larger level. This cheating is not an attempt to give an individual an edge... it is to completely cheat an entire team out of a win. It hands the game to the cheater on a silver platter. If they EVER lost a game in the years they were cheating, they were a horrible team. I hate it because I think Brady is phenomenal, but who knows? If your offensive coordinator knows what defense the other team is going to run it's easy to call plays that makes your quarterback look great.

With the revenues that come with winning SuperBowls... Heck! just winning games... what bill did is criminal. The Eagles should press criminal charges against the Pats.

I am equally disgusted that because goodell is a friend of Mr. Crafts, nothing was done about this. bill makes 6.5 million a year, $500,000 doesn't hurt. And knowing the 49ers of late, losing their first round pick STILL nearly guaranteed them a top ten pick.

I hate that this sport is becoming as corrupt as the rest. I always held it head and shoulders above the rest. This wouldn't have been given a slap, a VERY soft slap, on the wrist by our past commissioners.
