Herron & Rivers
The Patriots have claimed linebacker David Herron on waivers from the Minnesota Vikings. The team also re-signed tight end Marcellus Rivers, who had been cut yesterday.
Herron, at 6-foot-1, 239 pounds, projects as an inside linebacker in the Patriots' 3-4 defense. He played at Michigan State and signed with the Vikings as a free agent after the draft. He was working as a second-string outside linebacker in Minnesota's 4-3 defense in the preseason, and also was a factor on special teams coverage units.
The re-signing of Rivers gives the Patriots a fourth tight end, joining Benjamin Watson, Kyle Brady and David Thomas.
Herron and Rivers fill the 54th and 55th spots on the roster, which the Patriots have because of an exemption for Asante Samuel and due to Rodney Harrison's four-game suspension.
Also, guard Gene Mruczkowski has been claimed on waivers by the Miami Dolphins.
