Brady on SI cover

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots are the cover story in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated. Quarterback Tom Brady is the cover picture, marking the eighth time he's been on SI's cover.

Sports Illustrated calls the Patriots "The Winning Machine" and writes: "After a systematic dismantling of the unbeaten Cowboys, Tom Brady and the Patriots are clearly operating on a higher plane than the rest of the league. Can the Colts, or anyone else, stop them?"

The Colts definitely provide our biggest challenge. The fact that they've beaten us recently allows them to go into that matchup with a level of confidence that other teams wouldn't have. Also the game is in their dome where Manning and their receivers play very well. I am not as concerned whether our offense will score, but how will our Defense stop their team?
Our "D" didn't look great against Dallas, and Indy is a much more experienced group on offense. However, I think Belichick will get the troops ready and we can edge the Colts in a high scoring game.

Does anyone have any idea of the extent of Morris' injury? The silence is deafening.

Don M said:

I think the question is could they have ever stopped him if Brady always had these weapons; Like Manning has?

Socko said:

Mike - since you cover the Patriots can you give us a update on the status of Sammy Morris??? In the locker room or leaving the stadium was he wearing a sling indicating a colarbone injury??? As for Watson - was he wearing a boot or on crutches?

If you feel you are compromising you position with the team I understand but you would be the person who has access to seeing this type of thing.

If the Sox can trounce the "curse of the Bambino" after 86 years, I'm sure the Pats will/can dispel any SI "jinx"....is there really one anyway, or just someone's statistical perception? -- even so, if Brady's been on the cover so many times, did it ever affect the outcome?. And, one more thing, let's not forget all the unsung heros on this Pats team. The 'background boys" make it all possible. This must be what sports heaven is all about. GO PATS! And, go sox.....please?

Space Bandito said:

As long as he stays off the cover of the gossip magazines.

Calling Dillon? Anyone know his mailing address. Send him a card. A little piece of the humble pie. Garret Mills?

Forget about any SI jinx - what is that anyway, a cousin of a lynx? Brady IS the superstition everyone whishes to be.

Patriots reign supreme! And it feels damn, DAMN good!

ken deiss said:

there is no jinx brady is the real deal.after the sox won it all...no more jinx. everyone in spors networks are missing the story... tom brady and bill beli, are the best ever.

Special K said:

I remember another Pro athlete that stuck his tongue out in the midst of performing at a high level. Went by the name of Michael Jordan. He seemed to have avoided "the jinx" on more than one occasion...

notype ofjinx said:

I thought the SI jinx only referred to being on the cover at the start of the season - not on the cover at any random time.

get real said:

oh nooooo... brady has only been the SI cover like half a dozen other times, all of which resulted in debilitating injuries... come on now people, let's stop being silly for once.

TB said:

...just getting started

THUMPER said:

SI should just keep him there for the rest of the season

BB said:

Folks, we are witnessing sports history here. This is truly a special time. These are the good ol days. Enjoy it!

I'm looking forward to the NFL's first 100-point game appropriately jammed down the throat of week 15's opponent.

billcop said:

There goes the undefeated season! First Papelbon gets on the cover and the Sox dig themselves a 3 games to 1 hole against the Indians, now Brady and the Pats. Can you say "Lookout in Miami"?!

ryan said:

YOOOOO!!!!!!!!
GO PATS!

Donna said:

Bummer.... I was looking forward to 15 and 0 - but I guess we'll have to settle for 6 and 9.....

Eric said:

If it were the cover of Madden '09, then I would be worried, but this? Nahhhhh

JLG3 said:

Brady eats SI for breakfast.

Damian Price said:

If he makes the Madden cover...then we worry.

Roro said:

I think the Pats have the best team in the league this year, but Indy has been outplayed us for the last three meetings. I hope general Brady and Co. can matchup with them in their own field. The Pats will go 15-1 for the season because of this Indy comfort zone at home.

BilliJo Anastasi said:

I am a member of the BRADY BUNCH and know that the always focused TB is not effected by "jinxes" and it always will be about the win.

Patriot^-1 said:

Just wait till Patriots play the Colts... Manning will beat the Patriots... once again proving who is the better QB. Remember Colts D has regularly intercepted Brady... He ain't gonna be that effective against the Colts... Colts rank 3rd in passing defense.

DSloan said:

Jimx shminx. I'm not overly concerned about Miami, though these 'fights with little brother'/divisional games should never be overlooked. No, I'm more concerned with Washington, believe it or not. THAT'S a classic 'look past' game the week ahead of Indy. Washington can run and play defense. The Pats should beat them by 20, but .....

Dave said:

wow people chill out! He's been on the cover 8 times and and he has 3 rings, and he's only gotten better this year. What Jinx?? Plus Moss was on the cover after the 1st game of the year, no jinx for him either?? Go Pats!!

Tom Helton, Matt Holliday and Troy Tulowitzki said:

Jeez, How many more games in a row do we have to win before we can get on the cover? Oh, I'm sorry - 20 of 21 isn't good enough for you, SI?

agcsbill said:

The 'Phins are salivating. The Pats are on the cover of SI going into their game in Miami, home to a 21-0 loss last year. Look what almost happened to Dallas going into Buffalo. Granted Romo helped alot with those picks. Don't think the Pats are gonna fall for that this time though. But in the NFL, they say.. "any team, any time"

Brittany said:

*prays we bypass the Si Cover jinx!*

Ryan said:

The No.1 Quarterback will ALWAYS still the cover.

GO PATS!!!!!

MIKE said:

THE PATS ARE IMMUNE TO ALL JINXSES. IT'S THE BRADY WAY.

Eric said:

I still have no idea why teams trash talk after we destroy them?

David Sobel said:

Too bad Brady can't pitch for the Red Sox.

Ryan said:

The Pats have been on the front cover of SI prior to the AFC Championship and Super Bowl XXXIX and we still showed them up. No worries Pats fans! We got the Fire!!!

"The Dolphins have been preparing for the Pats all season. Brady is done"
HAHA.... Is that why they haven't won any of their 1st six games?

Brian G. Walsh said:

I'd adopt Tom Brady if I could! When your best player is also your hardest worker and the consummate "team player," you have a rare jewel. As for next week's game, the Dolphins are a joke this season. While I would never take a division opponent lightly, there is no such thing as a jinx. Pats - 35 Dolphins - 16

Steve H said:

You can't just let things sit. You have to call attention to them thus putting any loss under a magnifying glass. That's the problem with the media in general. You add insult to injury. I think if they do lose, SI gets what they deserve. Send me an SI Jinx shirt. Dare you to print this or will it bruise your ego.

Why don't you put DiceD-K on the cover with a noose around his neck. That's right, Diced. Most dis-honorable. If Crisp could hit he'd be on there.

Give it up with the whole jinxing the pats thing. Their wins arent based on luck or fate, they are talented..very talented...they are a team...they do what teams are supposed to do, they just do it way better. They are the reason I love Football.

JC said:

Pats 31 to 13!

Brian said:

Dear Tom,
The key to your success has been the turnover ratio. If that changes ("when" I mean) then Coach Bill will have to pull some rabitts out of his hood to keep the streak going. This old defense will struggle in the second half of the season when they tire out, thus lower level of performance, thus less turnovers, thus less favorable turnover ration, thus less gimme wins. By the way, congratulations on the SI Cover.

STEVEO said:

BRADY ON THE COVER OF S.I. THE WEEK BEFORE GOING INTO MIAMI, CAN YOU SAY JINX! BUT WITH THIS MIAMI TEAM THAT MEANS THERES A CHANCE THEY MIGHT BEAT THE 161/2 POINT SPREAD

Russ said:

Do you think for a minute the Patriot way includes superstition?

Jeff said:

there is no curse...how many times has brady been on the cover?

Kelly said:

I don't believe in jinxes...until you look at the bottom right corner of the cover...

THE GAUD said:

BRADY THRIVES UNDER ANY AND ALL SPOTLIGHTS. HE MIGHT NOT EVEN BE AWARE HE'S ON THE COVER OF SI.

Phil mehup said:

Hes been on it 8 times and its the madden video game cover thats the new jinx!! LMAO pats rule best NFL team EVER!!! His women count as part of that conclusion.

Mr Sarcasm said:

SI jinx? Oh please! That is just an old urban legend. Just look at the other team on the cover of SI this week: South Florida. They are an unstoppable machine! You don't see the SI jinx messing with them now do you?....

John said:

They have never lost a regular season game when a player s from the Patriots has been on the cover of Sports Illustrated

jim s said:

Great! Tom now has mover covers than Giselle, but I'm still worried about the balance of the pass- run offense with both backs now part of the MASH unit.

Dave said:

If you don't remember what Tony Dungy said about how there should be asterisks next to the Patriots' Super Bowl victories, rest assured the Patriots do. The Pats are going to carve up the Colts just on adrenaline.

Colin said:

Brady is to good to be jinxed, he is above them.

Linda said:

Hopefully the Pats have got a scrabbler in Tom's helmet so the Dolphins cant get the calls too. After all, its the only way the Dolphins beat them that year. Funny that after it being admitted by the Dolphins player, they didnt get a fine. Seems that the Pats are playing under a microscope and getting fined for everything. Does the NFL think they are the only ones making rough plays? Or are they the only ones being watched???

SIRIK said:

I'm taking bets!! Week 15 how many snowballs we'll be thrown at Eric Ratgini- 500??1000? Oh God please let it snow that day!!

Chris said:

I believe the Jinx is only if you POSE for the cover (i.e. Garciaparra).

A player can't contol if they pick your game photo for the cover.

AHV said:

That's the tenth time he's been on SI's cover
