Cowboys follow-up
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
A few links from Dallas following up on the Cowboys' perspective following their loss to the Patriots:
A Dallas Morning News columnist takes coach Wade Phillips to task for his game-plan against the Patriots. Phillips explained his approach at a Monday press conference, saying "I think you've got to [stop the run first] to win. I think you've got to force them into passing situations and go after them." That didn't go over well with the columnist, who believes focusing on the running game -- and not QB Tom Brady -- was the wrong way to go.
The Dallas Morning News also has a piece on the Cowboys hoping to face the Patriots again, in the Super Bowl.
Should the teams meet in the Super Bowl, Cowboys receiver Patrick Crayton provides some more bulletin-board material for the Patriots in this Fort-Worth Star Telegram piece. "Offensively, they are the real deal. I'm not going to lie about that," Crayton said. "Defensively, I can tell you no, they're not. They're not [that good] at all. The only time they stopped us is when we had penalties. If that's stopping us, it is what it is. Defensively, they are not the real deal."

(25)It was obvious Phillips was trying to stop Randy Moss. He is just trying to save his butt, by saying he was able to stop the run after the fact.
And Dallas' efforts to stop the Patriots offense WERE the real deal?
Puuuulease!!
If we see them again ... and I stress IF Dallas doesn't self-destruct along the way ... then you can bet your bottom dollar that Belichick will have ironed out the Patriots coverage issues that allowed the modest gains made by Dallas on Sunday. Richard Seymour will be back by then, so Juilus Jones and Marion the Barbarian can count on even more pressure at the line and Mr. Romo can count on a thumping the likes of which he's yet to see.
Additionally, the Patriots running backs will likely be healthier than at present, which will expose Dallas' not-so-real-deal defense to stresses it didn't have to face last Sunday.
All things considered, you can attribute Crayton's absurd comments to a combination of frustration, jealousy and a serious lack of professionalism and class. The Patriots defense isn't ranked where it is for no reason.
Crayton just keeps talking, even after losing by 21.
Wow Dallas already has there tickets booked to the superbowl. Mike, are the pats D in top five in nfl for fewest points allowed? We basically only gave up 17 points to a high powered offense in Dallas and Cinncanatti. Sounds like the real deal to me....
That's alright Patrick, offensively, Dallas isn't the "real deal" either so that just about evened it out on Sunday didn't it?
The defense isn't the real deal? Hmm, well, that'll look nice on the bulletin board should the two teams eventually meet again.
I think someone should inform Mr Crayton that the Pats typically play their best defensive football in Nov/Dec heading in to the playoffs. I believe they are notorious for starting slowly defensively, especially against good offensive teams.
Lets hope the Pats face the Boys in the Superbowl. Great Bulliten Board material!!
"Defensively they are not the real deal" -- Patrick Crayton
As if the Pats needed any more motivation...
Well, then, I'm not going to lie about it either. Their defense is even worse.
Add Patrick to the long long list of sore losers/haters.
They dont even know how they got beat, that's what is so funny about all of their comments. Like Tony Romo saying "i'd like to see what the outcome would have been if we hadn't had that penalty on fourth and one...", they just have NO clue what happened.
Let's not get to high on ourselves here. The O is awesome but tell me you're confident the Pats can stop anyone in the Red Zone. Not...If they continue to play D the way they played the last 2 games you can kiss home field for the playoffs Good-bye on Nov 4!
Every fan has a right to back their team. Loyalty is nice. Coaches, players and fans trash talk too much. But having a little class goes a long way and the Patriots certainly didn't have any class to speak of period. They could have taken a knee but instead chose to run up the score. Cowboys would and never have done that to any opponent. Even if the Cowboys faced their rival Redskins, they have never run up the score when they obviously could have. Maybe after the Colts punk the Patriots for the AFC championship they can help polish the abundant amount of superbowl trophies the Cowboys have over the Patriots including the this seasons trophy!
Taking a knee was an immediate turn over on downs and the cowboys have the ball with - what 30-40 seconds to go? They couldn't kneel out the clock. You kneel when you end the game in possesion of the ball not when you think your opponent is embarrassed.
Sure the cowboys couldn't score twice in 20 seconds. That's never happened before, right?
"The only time they stopped us is when we had penalties" -Patrick Crayton
Crayton just isn't very smart. In the first half, the Pats forced Dallas into 3-and-outs on three of five possessions. Dallas had zero total penalties on those three drives. And when Dallas got the ball back with about 4:00 minutes to go in the game down 14, Romo threw an INT on his first pass. Not sure which penalty caused that.
If Wade "Marty" Phillips hand't called timeout that never would have happened. Cowboys fans, coaches, and players seem to be unable to handle the fact that they may have actually lost this game without conspiracy.
Also, in order for the Colts to "punk" the pats they would have to trick them. If the Colts need to trick the pats to win, then so be it. Its probably a better strategy than stopping a backup RB and letting Brady throw 5 TDs.
Who cares about the Cowboys, we won't see them again this year so let's move on to when will we see Richard Seymour? I haven't seen an interview, an update nothing. Adam Schefter on NFL.com sid he was close but I know my man Mike has the inside scoop, what's happening Mikey?
It's great to be a Pats fan, but being objective I believe Crayton had a point, the Pats D was not very good ... they did give up 27 to a team that had only limited chances as the O dominated the clock. 27 is more than enough to win most games in the NFL. Whether it was bad schemes or bad tackling or lack or communication or just an off night ... they gave up 27 to a decent offensive team, but Dallas is not the Colts.
Yes they added Thomas and Seymour is still out, but they are primarily run stoppers. I'm still not convinced that the D is that much better than the one that blew a huge lead and gave up 38 to the Colts. How many teams have you heard of that score 34 and lose?!!
We'll get a good idea how good our Pats are defensively in the the next few games ... Washington and then INDIE! It goes without saying that any team with Tom Terrific will do well ... look at last year ... and with the receivers he has this year, the Pats could break all offensive records.
They're lucky they only had 12 penalties. You could have called holding on every offensive snap. I realize its part of the game, but there were more head locks, tackles and jerseys pulled off the shoulder pads than I've ever seen.
"But having a little class goes a long way and the Patriots certainly didn't have any class to speak of period. They could have taken a knee but instead chose to run up the score."
Umm, if you take a knee on fourth down, the clocks stops with a change of possession IMMEDIATELY. So, the Pats went for it to run even MORE time off the clock.
Now, Rick, you can't TELL me that Dallas wouldn't have done the exact same thing.
Talk is cheap i do hope Pats wound up playing cowboys in super bowl let him (Crayton ) talk more; he just puts more fuel in the fire
We would have been able to take a knee on fourth down if Irving Cowboys had not stopped the clock twice on that final drive. That last touchdown was Wade Phillips fault, not BB's. Speaking of Phillips, can you believe the wimp went for a field goal on 4th and goal when he was 14 points down and there was very little time left in the game??! I am glad the 'boys have him for a coach, they will never be a threat during his time there.
"...the Pats D was not very good ... they did give up 27 to a team that had only limited chances as the O dominated the clock. 27 is more than enough to win most games in the NFL."
While I agree the defense doesn't seem to inspire as much confidence as they have in past years, the 27 points Dallas scored was not all against them. 7 points were from Brady's strip sack, and another 3 points came after Dallas ran back a kickoff giving their offense the ball already in field goal range. That makes it 17 "legitimate" points that the Pats D gave up. Not too shabby considering how highly rated the Cowboy's offense is.
Boy am I tired of hearing people whine about the Pats being classless or running up the score with that final touchdown. It's obvious that the way the Pats did it is the only sportsmanlike way! They could not run out the clock, due to Dallas calling time outs. You don't just voluntarily hand the ball over to your opponent and send your defense out on the field again. Classless would have been taking the easy points and kicking the field goal. Instead they basically said, "We're running it up the middle. Stop us if you can." No tricky stuff, no passing, no timeouts taken after the 2 minute warning, just simply playing until the whistle.
If the Cowboys (or really to be fair, Cowboys fans, since I haven't seen any players complaining abou this) can't handle that, they should remember that this is professional sports, where the goal is winning and you get paid handsomely to take or give a beating, and it's not scholastic sports where the goal is developing sportsmanship and having fun. Grow up.
They gave up only 17 points to the NFC's alleged best offense, held Romo to under 200 yards passing, and held the team to under 100 yards rushing.
Yeah, the Pats D really is a question mark.
The problem with Crayton is that he is not tying the penalties to the fact that the Pats defense IS that good. When your lineman have to grasp desperately to a jersy to keep their quarterbak from getting sacked, and all the lineman and receivers are knee-jerking because of how fast this defense can come up field, that is what caused the penalties, they weren't just mental miscues....just my two cents
