Humble Pie

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff October 4, 07 11:55 AM

FOXBOROUGH -- As the media entered the Patriots locker room today at Gillette Stadium, many of the players were wearing the same T-shirt, with the same words on it.

The gray T-shirt had the words "I eat it" on the front. On the back were the words "humble pie."

The T-shirts were made by linebacker Adalius Thomas.

"It was just some fun, sort of a change-up," said Thomas, who was one player drawing a large media crowd today. "Be humble, or get humble. You have to humble yourself every day in life. It was just a fun idea to do it.

"Sometimes you do need some humble pie. You think you're better than what you really are, and so we get a nice dose of humble pie."

One player noted that a special sweatshirt was also produced for coach Bill Belichick, but the message was slightly different than what the players wore. The sweatshirt for Belichick had the words "I serve it" on the front, with the words "humble pie" on the back -- which reflects how Belichick seemingly has a knack for not allowing players to have an inflated opinion of themselves.

The players wore the T-shirts to their team meeting this morning.

  1. Mike,

I do not understand how one team can have such great players. Not only are their great players, but great people. This is what they mean by "A Patriots Player."

  1. The only thing better than for a new high profile player like Adalius Thomas to do something like this would have been for Randy Moss to do it. However, my guess is that Randy is wearing his Humble Pie Tee Shirt proudly.

People can say what they want about Coach Belichick, but the way he has every player buying into his team, and the way his teams are prepared for every game is truly amazing.

  1. Belichick is very much like Vince Lombardi in the way he treats his players. Lombardi had a way of having his players focus on the team above everything else and that's what it takes to be a consistent winner.

As Henry Jordan once said, "He treats us all the same. Like dogs!"

  1. Whatever it is Belichick sprays on these players, some other teams should purchase it by the case.

    Like the Chargers.

    Or the Bengals.

Which reminds me: Watching Ocho Cinco Monday night with his customized HOF blazer before the game, it occurred to me that if any of the Patriots' receivers pulled a move like that, his teammates would rip him apart like a pack of jackals when he got back to the sideline.

  1. Can the general public purchase one of these shirts? Would be a nice addition to the collection of other player sponsored apparel from over the years. Remember those "Homeland Defense" winter caps?

  1. Remember those words for somewhere along the line they'll probably come true. They're not going to be able to keep this winning pace up throughtout the entire season. Some time were all going to have to taste some humble pie. I see a great season ahead but not undefeated!

  1. This is great!

Its just another player buying into the patriots "team first" system. Hopefully they will start selling these t shirts, I can add it to my collection with other great t shirts, including the homeland defense t and Pedrioa' Destroya' shirt.
    Bring on the colts!

  1. It's one thing to know how to play football in the NFL. It's another to know how to win in the NFL.

  1. I remember the days when the Patriots were a cast of characters, now they are a cast with character. Stand up for what you believe and accept the consequences. I believe that if this continues the consequence will be another Super Bowl victory.

  1. They are not 4-0. They have won 1 game 4 times in a row. They focus only on the next game in front of them. The worst thing an undefeated team can do is start believing they are undefeated. This is the creed Belichick has pounded into them. That is why they win!

  1. Proud to be a Patriot Fan. Took a great deal of Flack from envious folks in Bay Area (49rs and Raiders Country). However, my wife who is a 49rs Fan proudly wore my Patriots hat to support my beloved PATS. P.A.T.S. actually should mean: "Patriots Are a Team of Solid people". Enough said, Cleveland Next.

  1. Love this year's team. So much talent, so many great players with good character.

In Belichick We Trust. Modern day Vince Lombardi if there ever was one.

  1. The Lombardi analogy is right on. When you wear the Patriot uniform, your ego goes out the window, but not your swagger. Look how quickly the fallout subsided in the press over the video incident in N.Y. This is a team that is both feared but above all respected around the country.

  1. I think the Tee-shirt is partially in reference to TBrady's post game interview where he referred to being fed humble pie from Coach B over some of the sloppy play in the first half.

But it is also completely true that humility is a prerequisite mental state for learning to occur. If I start from the position that I know everything, then it is impossible for me to learn anything. There is a huge difference between humility and humilation. Ironically, humiliation is most often experienced due to the absence of humility. You seldom see the Pats make the same mistake twice, ergo goodbye Reche, hello Randy.

  1. I DON'T KNOW WHY ANY PLAYER WOULD WANT TO GO TO ANY OTHER TEAM THAN THIS ONE.

  1. If any of the Pats take Cleveland lightly, I'm sure BB can point to the Arizona game last week, where two of the Steelers' former coaches managed an upset.

Not that I think there's much of a worry about overconfidence.

  1. Listening to Collinsworth yesterday I realize how much of the media is numbers driven. He directed the facts for his benefit and spent 90% of his time saying how honest he was. WE don't know the reason for the video but what is overwhelmingly clear is that it is NOT the reason they win. The reason they win is what is written in these blogs andthat is the truth - no explanations.

  1. Players aside, Belichick having that shirt on is nothing short of hypocrisy. Him keeping his mouth shut or giving a worthless response is not the same as being humble. You want a lesson in humble, listen to Tony Dungy for 1 sound bite and you'll get more than a career's worth from Belichick.
